This course is designed for junior industrial design students to conduct design research and execute a systematic design process emphasizing human-centered design(HCD) and humanizing technology. Through a series of projects, this course provokes students' creative and critical design thinking. The emphases of this course are: (1) to understand diverse design research methods and tools for the development of HCD; (2) apply appropriate design methods to identify design problems and opportunities; (3) explore creative design concepts to solve design problems; (4) develop useful, usable, desirable, and meaningful design solutions: and (5) present the overall design processes and solutions in persuasive deliverables.

As a non-profit, the Houston Furniture Bank greatly relies on the contributions of hardworking volunteers to help reach their goal of making empty houses homes. However, due to a lack of community outreach and existing volunteer education, recruitment and retention is minimal. Our group created a digital + physical volunteer guide and badge system that educates volunteers while working on their assigned tasks, which increases on-site efficiency and encourages volunteer retention.
Kasa is a bean bag that utilizes upcycled materials used in mattresses at the Houston Furniture Bank. Its simplistic form allows the user to manipulate it to their preference and comes in different sizes for the adult, the child, and the pet. Kasa’s main purpose is to solve Houston Furniture Bank’s issue on leftover material and to repurpose it as a piece of furniture they can potentially sell.
Created in response to the rampant pileups of scrap wood to be found within the Houston Furniture Banks; YASER+ is a modular furniture system that is formed out of waste material. Utilizing waste materials can be constructed into practical, modular pieces that can be repositioned to fulfill a variety of furnishing needs!
Improve HFB's outreach to spread awareness of their organization and their mission of "Making Empty Houses Homes" to people across the greater Houston area. By doing this, the Houston Furniture Bank can bring in more volunteers and meaningful donations to their organization.
