INDS 3500 is designed for junior industrial design students to explore design problems at an intermediate level of complexity and rigor with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and systematic learning in the real world. In Fall 2020, while facing the serious pandemic crisis and the domestic severe social issues, this course is particularly designed to conduct design experimentations in responding to the lasting impact of these critical issues:
Project 1: A Study and Reflection on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Issues
Project 2: Addressing current and future impacts of COVID19 through Design

Meet TummiTote! The premier food carrier and planter, for kids! Initially, TummiTote serves as a handy meal carrier and tote for fast food. After meal consumption, TummiTote offers the capability to function as a planter, growing small plants or succulents. Whether it’s mealtime or “harvest” TummiTote offers the best experience for the whole family!
Rebelumen is a modular, analog desktop light diffuser and reflector. Utilizing a small lamp directly behind the white screen diffuses light to increase webcam quality. Pointing a lamp toward the front of Rebelumen allows the light to reflect off the curved flat white screen to also increase webcam quality.
Inspired by the chaotic character of the human mind, Cerebra’s delicate and disorganized wire-form emphasizes the perceived notion of how autism is viewed in the norm. The dual layer wire form separates the inside and the outside, the outer coat presenting how autism is viewed as, while the inner primary colors contrast. The three forms connect with each other to unify and represent the community as a whole.
Arameta is a light designed to provoke thought into the issue of racism by physically embodying the tragedy of racial tension and prejudice. Its amorphous form suggests an inherent motion as if something within is pushing to get out. This is metaphoric of how racial appearance and associations can prevent an individual’s true inner value, such as personality, intelligence, or talent from shining through and being considered and appreciated. The flat,ribbon-style cord can be wrapped around the luminescent body; and seemingly constricts, as a sort of variable shade that obfuscates the light and creates a unique appearance. Unwrapping the cord unbinds and unleashes the entirety of the light within.
Kirameki is a unique lighting collection targeting the specific needs of those with atypical light aversion. Warm ambient light (300-400 lumen) provides the perfect balance between functionality and comfort for both patients and their families. A spark of hope for those living with photosensitivity, and a poetic statement piece bringing attention to the lack of visibility for those in the shadows.
Junto is a magnetically bound coil bracelet that comes in different metal finishes and an endcap to support charms. The bracelet can be separated into two, but cannot properly function without the other supporting it. Junto’s main purpose is to represent the struggles that Latinos face when being forcefully deported and teach the importance of family togetherness.
Due to the pandemic, the theatre industry has suffered immensely. Social distancing and safety precautions have caused most companies to go dark, actors are unemployed, and patrons are left without their beloved artistic escape. Through research on the topic of sustaining live theatre in existing venues, I developed a conceptual check-in station that scans tickets, checks the patron’s temperature, and directs them to their seat. This product would be distributed around a theatre lobby.

Neutron
In the context of COVID-19, the fear of falling ill will linger in the minds of patrons whenever they step foot inside a restaurant, creating a need for proper measures in place that, at least reduce, if not alleviate those concerns. Neutron is designed for this new normal; seamlessly integrating within the restaurant environment to encourage dining-in at local restaurants by creating safe zones around individual dining spaces that actively remove infectious airborne particles before getting trapped in the building’s air circulation.
Quanta is an antimicrobial copper handrail and air-filter ecosystem, helping to combat airborne viruses through contact points and the air. The HEPA air filter sits into the telescopic stand and connects to the magnetic charging port located at the top. The charging port wiring runs through the upper piping into the ceiling. This allows the HEPA filter to be wireless and easier to use.
Aporo highlights the need for sanitation in the delivery space. There are dozens of contact points, shared equipment, and a lack of equipment sanitation. The goal was to design a device (package/vehicle oriented) to sanitize packages en route to the consumer. Aporo is an adjustable-length, ceiling-mounted UV-C light for use in the cargo area of commercial package delivery vehicles.
COPD Patients are more likely to die from Covid-19 than other patients. Although there is not a cure for it, there are some things they can do to help them with their condition such as CPAP therapy. Vayu is a modular mask that both protects the user and also works like a mini CPAP machine. Its two small but powerful fans blow warm air into the user's nose and mouth area based on a pattern chosen by the user.
A chair that utilizes the concept of active seating to give the user more physical activity throughout their day, even while seated. Aktiv features a locking ball in socket mechanism at the base which when activated requires users to actively stay balanced while seated, or the lock can be engaged and keep the seat stationary when the active seating is not desired. With Aktiv, you can still have fun passive exercise, even when working at your desk.
