The jewelry industry has become stagnant. Same shape, cut, color jewelry everywhere you go. No innovation despite the abundant resources to do so. This sea of similarity has its repercussions, and it has caught up to the industry as a whole. In the past 5 years , there has been a 13% drop in retailers. In 2019 alone, companies reported a 25% drop in shares.
So how do I change this trend?
It began with consumer interviews. What did they like, dislike, and wanted to see. Through many conversations, I found that they were tired of the sames, loved uniqueness in the pieces they found , and longed for something that could let them explore their creative tastes more. They wanted adaptability, customization;but most of all, they wanted the innovation that has been so elusive to them in the main market.
With the help of the expand-ability principles of bistable auxetics and customizable modularity, I was able to create innovative jewelry for a new era.

Hi, I’m Maryam Ghanem, a designer born and raised in Houston, Texas. Stories and art have always been with me, ever since I was a little kid . As an occupational day dreamer , I always wanted to make magical things come to life. I have a ten year traditional art background that helped me notice small, beautiful moments in my surroundings. With design, I can make these small, beautiful moments and emotions so much more potent. To me, design is a dialogue between the user and the designer. I am proud to say that I have become fluent in this language. I look forward to starting my career as a designer, bringing a whole new type of magic in the designs I make!
