SIDSA: A Community for Designers

The first few weeks in the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design can feel surreal. As a new class of students assembles each year, they begin to settle into their new reality - long nights, critiques, supply runs, hand cramps, the usual. But one of the most important aspects of design education is studio culture, and the bond that forms between studio mates. Throughout our time at UH, we have to rely on each other for honesty, relief, growth, encouragement, and inspiration. In this same spirit, SIDSA operates today as a way to deepen and elevate these bonds through our values of community, development, and networking.

Over the past four years, I have been able to see SIDSA evolve into an independent, powerful advocate for design at UH, and it is thanks to design students doing what designers do best - identifying problems and creating solutions. Every year students pass on their knowledge to a new generation through surfacing tutorials, photography workshops, sketching sessions, and more. We have created and continue to expand our own conferences and exhibits, as well as offering opportunities to participate in professional conferences outside of UH. Students are constantly contributing their skills and experiences to help their fellow designers. As Professor George Chow says, “No designer left behind” is in our blood.

My hope for SIDSA is that this legacy continues, and our community grows each year. We rely not only on each other, but also our professors, the Houston community, alumni, and professionals to strengthen our collective identity of Industrial Design.
